Apple super-analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is back with a raft of predictions about Apple’s 2020 pipeline including the Apple AR Glasses, a new MacBook keyboard and an iPad Pro with a 3D sensor (rear time-of-flight camera) for better augmented reality support. The new MacBook will be designed with a scissor-switch keyboard.

Apple Augmented Reality Glasses

For the XR industry, the most exciting prediction is the expected arrival of the long-rumored Apple augmented reality headset in the first-half of 2020 which means that the Apple Glasses are only a few months away. Ming-Chi Kuo’s new Apple predictions have been published in a Chinese language report.

Some of these devices have been cropping up in various reports and leaks over the years so their existence is not really revelation. The latest Ming-Chi Kuo reports confirms the previous rumors. The only factor that has shifted is the dates.

Kuo has corroborated his previous prediction made earlier this month that Apple’s successor to iPhone SE is set to arrive in the first quarter of 2020. Earlier reports by Bloomberg and Nikkei suggested that the new iPhone would the same design as the iPhone 8 but its chipset will be the same as that of the iPhone 11. The pricing for the new iPhone isn’t known yet but the original SE was reasonably lower priced and had a much smaller size.

Kuo has also predicted that the new iPad Pro model would arrive in Q1 in 2020. One of its important features is that it is equipped with a rear-facing 3D time-of-flight sensor which will enable it to offer users a superb augmented reality performance. This latest prediction also corroborates another earlier report by Bloomberg which had stated that Apple is planning to debut a new laser-powered 3D camera with the iPad Pro to be released in spring 2020. Bloomberg’s most recent report had pushed the date forward and suggested that the iPad Pro might arrive in later 2019 although this report hadn’t listed the 3D time-of-flight sensor as the iPad Pro’s new feature.

Apple Augmented Reality Glasses Arrive in Second Quarter of 2020

Kuo’s latest prediction on Apple’s augmented reality headset for the iPhone states that these will arrive in the second quarter of 2020. In early this year, the Apple analyst had predicted that Apple was set to start the production of the headsets at the end of 2019. Another report had also suggested that the glasses could be launched in 2020. Some references to the augmented reality headset have also been discovered in the iOS 13’s code by hawk-eyed developers.

New MacBook

The final Kuo prediction is with regards to a MacBook that is built with a new scissor-switch keyboard and this, too, is set to launch in the second quarter of next year. It is still not clear which MacBook Kuo might be referring to. Since the analyst tends to give the exact models of his predictions, he could be referring to another model and not the 16-inch MacBook Pro that he had previously predicted would have a new keyboard this year. Or it could be the same model, after all. According to a Bloomberg report, the revamped 16-inch MacBook Pro could hit the market this year although Bloomberg doesn’t provide much detail about its keyboard.

2020 might just shape up to a year of killer Apple releases so get your pocket ready.
